American BBQ sauce comes in many flavors ranging from mustard-based sauce to sweet and sticky Kansas City sauce to vinegar based mop sauces of the East Carolinas.
I find Kansas City too sweet and East Carolina too acidic, but at the same time I like mustard too. So, I created this recipe to be my favorite American BBQ sauce.
12 oz cola
3/4 C ketchup
1/2 C brown sugar
1/4 C worcestershire
1/4 C bourbon whisky
1/4 C apple cider vinegar (start with 1 Tbsp and add to taste)
2 tsp brown mustard
1 Tbsp tabasco
1 tsp kosher salt
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp coffee grounds
- Reduce the cola down to about 1/2 volume (6 oz).
- Mix all ingredients together thoroughly
- (optional) Cook the sauce for 5 minutes on medium heat if you want to smooth the vinegar and bourbon notes a bit
